The plain white border around a QR code is called the quiet zone. It looks like wasted space in a layout, which is exactly why people delete it — and deleting it is the single most common reason a code that looked fine on screen fails once it is printed.
What the scanner is actually doing
A camera does not see a QR code the way you do. It sees a field of light and dark patches and has to work out which of them belong together. The three big squares in the corners tell it the orientation; the blank margin tells it where the pattern stops.
Take the margin away and the code runs straight into whatever is next to it — a headline, a photo edge, a coloured background block. The scanner now has to guess where the boundary is. Sometimes it guesses right after two or three seconds of hunting, which users read as broken even when it eventually works. Often it just never locks on.
How much you need
The standard is four modules on all four sides. A module is one of the small squares that make up the pattern, so the margin is measured in the code own units rather than millimetres.
That means the physical margin depends on how dense your code is:

If you do not want to count modules, use this rule instead: leave white space around the code equal to about one sixth of the code width. That is generous for dense codes and exactly right for simple ones, and it fails safe in the direction that matters.
What counts as intruding
The quiet zone has to be genuinely quiet. These all break it:
- Text or a caption sitting directly against the pattern
- A border, keyline or rounded frame drawn tight around the code
- A photo or gradient background showing through, even a pale one
- A coloured panel that ends at the code edge
- Another QR code placed too close alongside
A caption under the code is fine — it just needs to start after the margin, not inside it. Our frame options handle that spacing for you.
The mistake in real layouts
It usually happens at the last minute. The design is finished, the QR code is a fraction too big for its slot, and somebody crops the white edge off in Canva or InDesign to make it fit. The code still looks like a QR code, so nobody checks it, and ten thousand flyers go to print.

What our generator does
Every download from our generator already includes a correct four-module quiet zone. You do not need to add your own, and you should not need to adjust anything.
What you do need to do is leave it alone once the file is in another tool. When you place the PNG or SVG into a design, do not crop into the white area and do not set the image to fill a frame that clips its edges. If you are using a transparent background, remember the quiet zone becomes whatever is underneath it — so put it on a plain area, not over artwork.
Check it before it prints
Print the code at final size, put it on the actual material, and scan it from a normal distance. If it hesitates, the margin is the first thing to look at, before you start blaming the printer.
